New Glarus Bike Trip
May 21-22nd, 2016
Categories: News, Past Event Summary
On Saturday May 21st eleven four winders met up in New Glarus, WI Chamber of Commerce which once was a train depot. A handy parking lot and bike rental option were very helpful for us. We gathered got a few photos then headed to The Stewart Tunnel. The destination allowed us to discover two different bike paths, the Sugar River Trail and the Badger State Trail and a refreshing old train tunnel that allowed us to re-energize and ride back to town. We found a snake who may have lost his way on this ride. Most rode back and a few went on an additional adventure where they discovered many steep hills for a maximum challenge.
Most bikers met up at the Glarner Stube a Swiss delight. There was fondue, ruste, prime rib sandwiches, fried cheese curds and many other Swiss/German entrees and lots of lovely beer. Bikers became tourists and explored many quaint shops in town. Some folks stayed the night and some went home and some new folks joined us on Sunday for our Monticello trip.
On Sunday 13 bikers arrived and we took our photo in front of the Chalet Landhaus a beautiful Swiss Hotel. We tried to coax Marty to join our group but they were on another time frame. So off to Monticello and on the Sugar River Trail and six miles later we arrive and sniff out a watering hole. We have a few drinks and off we go. We had Ron rescue a snapping turtle off the path and point him in a safer direction. We were nearing the New Glarus Brewery and a group of bikers chose to ride up and it was a surprisingly steep road up there. Others rode back to the depot and collected their cars. We sampled some delicious beer in the beautiful court yard outside and were entertained by the 2 amazing gentlemen playing Swiss horns know as Labraphones. So we headed back to the New Glarus Hotel for more fondue and Swiss/German faire. We had a great meal and lots of laughs and a great adventure and the greatest weather and beautiful town.
Thanks for a great time,
Kathy
