It was a good weekend for driving and for skiing – little or no snow on the expressways going to and coming from the Upper Peninsula. Yet plenty of snow
at the areas of both Indianhead and Blackjack (double-header for those who had purchased 2-for-1 lift tickets) and the town of Wakefield.
Of course, all (42) arrived by Friday night, Feb. 23rd, a few spending some convivial beer time at Dudley’s, but most up and bright and early Saturday morning at The Restaurant, Main Lodge, for a rootin’ tootin’ north country free breakfast, waitress-served.
During the day most of us skied Indianhead, gathering at Smiley’s Cafeteria, Base Place, for snacks around noon, at the bottom. The racers among us left around one o’clock for the chairlift to the NASTAR point. Thanks to the National Ski Patrol, your writer was taken aboard a snowmobile to the finish line (and later brought back down same way) where he snapped Four Wind racers speeding for the finish.
That night we were all treated upstairs at the Ottawa Room, Main Lodge, to a grand seven-table pizza party, including buffet, games and things, well organized by our social director Sheri. The next morning, Sunday, some drove “next door” to Blackjack Mountain, while a few others rented snowshoes and did some fortifying snow trail time. But by late afternoon almost everyone had left for home.
A memorable time on this ski trip was had by all.
